Welcome to Philly Mr. Okafor: 2015 Draft Review

The Philadelphia 76ers didn’t leave the Barclays Center with who everyone thought they were going to draft, (D’Angello Russell). The Lakers picked up the phenom guard out of Ohio State at #2 before the Sixers could take their shot at him. With their target prospect gone before their eyes, many people wondered who the 76ers would take at #3. With already having two stud big men the field seemed to be wide open. However GM Sam Hinkie did what any smart GM would do, regardless of pieces, take the best player on the board. And that is exactly what the 76ers did, with the 3rd overall pick of the 2015 NBA Draft, the Philadelphia 76ers selected Jahlil Okafor, the freshman center out of Duke. With some of the best post moves seen in years out of a college big, the Sixers just couldn’t pass him up. When a team is in the rebuilding phase that Philadelphia is in right now, it doesn’t matter that you already have two centers, you take the best player you can get. You build your assets. So that when the time comes, you have weapons in the back of your pocket when need be. The harsh reality of the current situation in Philly is that yes, one of the three stud big men, either Jahlil, Joel, or Nerlens will have to find a new home. But that is the reality of playing in the NBA. When it comes down to it, the best players stay and the rest move on. Although the 76ers have a lot of question marks right now when it comes to their current roster, one question they don’t have is talent. They have plenty of that, and in the case of the 5 spot, perhaps one too many. As for Jahlil, he is enjoying his time in Philly so far. His first day on the team he was in the gym by 6:30. The first one there. He has since taken to the streets to sign autographs for kids and the fans. He is embracing his new home and is excited about the future. Just as every fan of the team should be. Trust the process. Is the current motto right now and couldn’t hold more true. It may take a few more years, but it is safe to say the 76ers are headed in the right direction, and Jahlil Okafor is at the forefront.

Sixers Look to Make Big Leap With Thursday’s Draft

On Thursday, June 25th at the Barclays Center in New York, New York, the Philadelphia 76ers will be ready to draft the next face of their franchise. The big question however is who will that be. With the 3rd pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, the Philadelphia 76ers select….. D’Angelo Russell? Justice Winslow? Frank Kaminsky? Jahlil Okafor? The question is one that can only be answered by the Philadelphia front office on Thursday night, the rest is up for speculation. But who do I hope we draft? D’Angelo Russell, who is seen to be the best guard available on the board. A position the Sixers are lacking at after parting ways with Michael-Carter Williams last season. The former Ohio State guard would fit in perfect with the young group currently set in place and could very well be the most exciting player in a Sixers uniform since Allen Iverson. At just 19 years old, and the projected #3 overall pick, Russell has an enormous upside. If the Lakers and Timberwolves pass on him for the bigs that they both are in need of, it only makes sense that we take him at 3. Although crazier things have happened in past drafts and this year may very well turn out that way as well. By having the #3 pick the Sixers are getting a lot of interest from other organizations looking to move up on the board (and probably steal D’Angelo from us). Although some trades do work out for the better when teams give away their lottery picks for other valuable additions and other picks later on down the line, I don’t think this is our time do that. The city and the team is in need of a superstar to get us to that next level we were once at for so many years. Without a championship since the one Dr. J brought us in ’83, we need to go after championship caliber talent and that is exactly what D’Angelo is! I can’t wait much longer, can it just be Thursday night already?!
